Uncoated Freesheet US shipments down 20% in first two months; January exports overtake imports While US domestic uncoated freesheet (UFS) shipments fell 19.1% in February from a year ago, UFS producers exported more tons in January than were imported although contacts last week described growing import volumes as the first quarter progresses. Updated statistics for February showed UFS domestic shipments of 764,700 tons were down from 945,500 tons a year ago, and for two months of the year at 1.58 million tons were 19.4% below the same period of 2008. Offset grades through two months were down 26.3%, and bond and writing 14.5% lower from a year ago, according to figures from American Forest & Paper Assn (AF&PA) . Opaque white rolls dropped 27.6% over two months to 70,755 tons, and opaque sheets were 15.5% lower to 49,617 tons. News Briefs—PULP&PAPER WEEK/April 3, 2009 International Paper (IP) plans downtime at its Ticonderoga, NY, uncoated freesheet mill for two weeks in May, eliminating an estimated 7,000 tons of output. One machine at the mill has run on a 10-days on, 4-days off schedule since the fourth quarter. At Franklin, VA, IP will cut 35 jobs in the paper mill’s sheeting and converting operation by the end of June, according to a local press report. IP will permanently close its sawmill in Franklin by the end of May. The company permanently closed one of six paper machines at Franklin in November. |
