IP rolling out new standard of whiteness and brightness for uncoated freesheet in U.S. International Paper last week announced to its U.S. customers that its entire range of uncoated freesheet papers for imaging, commercial printing, envelope, forms, and other major applications would be improved to a new standard of whiteness and brightness. This follows IP’s recent announcement that it was narrowing its focus to concentrate on uncoated papers as one of its two global business platforms. The new standard will affect about 3.5 million tons of the company’s U.S. capacity at five of its mills and will begin in September. “One of our core strategies to win is to differentiate our products by using new proprietary technologies,” said Sr. V.P. of IP’s Printing & Communications Papers business Paul Hebert. “We have developed a new technology for achieving higher levels of whiteness in paper, which makes much more efficient use of traditional chemicals and additives.” He said the technology increases the brightness of IP’s standard papers from 84 on the GE scale to 92, but more importantly, the whiteness will be dramatically increased to CIE levels of 135 and 145 with a uniformity of color unprecedented in commodity papers. In addition, IP would move its opaque and existing 88 brightness office paper to 96 with a corresponding higher CIE. “The uniformity of the paper luminosity enables printed text & images to be delightfully more striking & pleasing to end-users,” added Herbert. “The appearance of IP’s value added papers is similarly being improved.” He said the innovation is the first in a series of “breakthroughs” that collectively, IP calls VIP Technologies, which stands for Vision Innovation Papers. The company has already notified customers of plans to launch phase two & three also based on proprietary technology that will “create a meaningful differentiation in other important paper performance characteristics”. The technology invention is registered and patents are pending. IP will be making investments at its larger and lowest cost mills to enable them with the new technology and be selectively adjusting their capacities, Herbert said. He said the first example is the company’s $125 million project announced last December to “thoroughly modernize what is already one of the country’s best machines.” PM#1 at the Eastover, S.C. mill. Domtar has joined the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) voluntary Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program (C-TPAT). This government/private-sector partnership has formed to improve cross-border supply chain security in the wake of September 11, 2001, tragedy. Domtar’s participation means shipments will receive expedited customs clearance. Beginning July 14, 2005, Domtar will apply high-security seals on all direct cross-border shipments. These seals will ensure the integrity of Domtar cargo during distribution. Domtar is asking that you; 1. Inform your receiving personnel that as of July 14, 2005, all Domtar cargo containers will be secured with either a metal or a plastic seal. The high-security metal cables are 3/16” in diameter and your facility will need to cut them. Additionally, both types of seals will include a reference number that your receiving department will need to verify matches the number on the bill of lading. 2. Report any instance in which a Domtar delivery does not contain this seal, or the seal appears to have been tampered with. You can report this by calling your Brown Paper representative. Thank you for helping maintain the security of our supply chain. |
