As predicted, mills continue to take scheduled downtime and maintenance downtime in order to avoid high year end inventories.

In addition, IP recently announced the    permanent closure of PM 3 at its Franklin, VA mill.  This announcement, along with        Domtar’s announced shutdown of its         remaining paper machine at its Dryden Mill, reduces uncoated freesheet capacity by 300,000 tons.   A continuing sign that producers will attempt to match capacity with demand.

According to the American Forest Products Association, year-to-date uncoated freesheet shipments are down 6% in 2007 vs 2008 .

AC Neilson reported July 2007 through June 2008 direct mail volume is down 6.2% and financial services direct mail volume is down over 20%

The  uncoated freesheet market capacity in 2009 is predicted to be 12.9 million tons, down from 15.8 million in 2000.

Fraser Plans Paper Machine Downtime       in Maine

Dec. 4, 2008 - Fraser Papers said that it will take up to 5,100 tons of downtime on two paper machines at its East Papers operations in Madawaska, Maine, due to weak markets.

The company plans to shut down the machines December 24, 2008 and restart them on January 5, 2009.

Fraser said the downtime will allow the company to balance inventory levels of specialty and commodity groundwood   papers with customer demand.
