Brown Paper ReporterText Box: MeadWestvaco to sell coated/carbonless papers business to focus more on packaging and growing global markets
MeadWestvaco Corp.’s (MWV) planned exit from the coated papers sector marks a turning point in the company, transforming it into a packaging-focused organization intent on targeting growth in emerging, global markets. With the $2.3 billion sales of its papers business to a new company controlled by Cerberus Capitol Management LP, a private, New York-based investment firm, MWV’s portfolio becomes 74% packaging, 19% consumer and office products, and 7% specialty chemicals. The company’s current portfolio is 54% packaging, 28% papers, 13% consumer and office products, and 5% specialty chemicals. The new company controlled by Cerberus would become the largest North American coated paper producer based on capacity.
The sale, subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to close in second quarter 2005 and generate $2.1 billion in after-tax proceeds for MWV.
