Black liquor funding was the top story-issue for 2009; US producers now struggle with debt, demand, pricing. More than $8 billion in “black liquor” funding paid by the federal government to US pulp and paper companies was by far, the industry’s single most important story-issue of 2009, PPI Pulp & Paper Week editors declared in their eighth annual poll. The money was big, but more compelling was that it flowed to papermakers during the worst demand condition for US paper and board in more than 20 years, contacts said. Seven industry companies—three based in the USA and four more in Canada— filed for bankruptcy protection from large debt last year and are or completed financially restructuring, including two of North America’s largest seven: Smurfit-Stone Container (the fifth largest based on sales) & AbitibiBowater (seventh largest). The filings and fallout was the third most important story-issue of 2009, editors said. The second biggest was the crippling economic downturn– called the Great Recession by one author—that stripped down the US paper/board demand. Output dropped about 8.1 million tons or nearly 12% in 2009 vs. 2008. Demand dropped primarily because of the recession fueled by Wall Street’s bust up from sub-prime mortgage and derivatives losses, and also from ongoing US pulp and Paper industry structural decline.
