Hoping to reduce high operating costs and narrow its focus. Fraser Papers plans to permanently shut two uncoated freesheet (UFS) paper machines with 70,000tons/yr of capacity at its Madawaska, ME complex effective August 26th. The shutdowns are expected to reduce the mills operating costs by $14 million, yet affect 135 employees. Along with a previously announced shutdown of an off-machine groundwood coater at Madawaska, the company will make the shuts permanent and exit the lightweight coated groundwood (LWC) paper market-concentrating on specialty uncoated mechanical grades, including directory, supercalendered (SC) and high-bright papers, according to the company. By stopping LWC production, the company reduces its purchase of market pulp and its costs. The UFS production of specialty papers such as lightweight opaque will migrate to other larger, more efficient machines at Madawaska. Over the past few years, the company has realigned its grade focus and subsequently improved its product mix with a higher proportion of shipments of specialty packaging and printing papers in place of lower margin commodity freesheet grades. Fraser Papers’ shipments of lower margin commodity UFS grades declined 42% in the first quarter from fourth quarter levels, increasing average revenue by $35 ton.
