Memorial Day

Laser MOCR pricing continues to be unchanged despite successive drops in monthly shipments of all UFS grades.

Initial data supplied by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) show that March 2007 shipments dropped 6.6% when compared to March 2006.   YTD shipments have  declined by 6.5% through Q1.   Despite this continued decline, four major producers of cut size have announced a $60/ton price increase for May.

As paper mills develop a “run to demand” strategy and balance supply with demand, periods of tightening will occur.  2006 was a good example of this despite weak       demand.  This  approach enables paper mills to implement supply driven price       increases when necessary.

With significant capacity reductions on the horizon among IP, GP, Boise and           potentially Domtar, producers are expecting a tight market to develop in the coming months.  Based on what is happening on the supply side, there are enough contributing factors for the Laser MOCR producers to rationalize a price increase by Q3 of this year.
