North American uncoated free-sheet mills ranked by cash manufacturing costs
Since the last benchmarking study was done in 2001, average cash costs for printing and converting papers has declined by $26/ton (5.5%), xerographic papers by $14/ton (3.2%) and value added by $44/ton (6.4%).
The three largest North American uncoated free-sheet producers— International Paper Co. (27% of total capacity). Weyerhaeuser Co. (30%) and Domtar Inc. (14%) - also have the industry’s lowest cost mills. The Big Three , in fact, had the five lowest cost mills in all three uncoated free-sheet market segments.
Scope of study. The Paper Loop Benchmarking Services study provides clues how far uncoated free-sheet prices may decline in the current market downturn, in which demand has declined for three consecutive years and probably a fourth in 2003. It also indicates which mills will be the survivors and which are struggling in the current tough market environment in which demand has dropped about 10% since it’s peak in 1999, a market loss of 1.5 million tons. The study analyzes cash manufacturing costs for three segments of the 16.4 million ton capacity market: printing and converting (5.0 million tons), xerographic (6.5 million tons) and value added (4.9 million tons). The printing and converting segment includes such segments as offset, forms bond, envelope, and book paper, while value added includes products carbonless, premium writing, bristols, opaque, text and cover, release papers, and technical specialty papers.
