Brown Paper Market Update     9/28/09

Narrative:

Laser MOCR pricing remains unchanged. Shipments are also unchanged when compared to last month. October's $2.00 cwt Offset price increase will go into effect at the announced level.  Secondary mills have either filled backlogs or taken orders for shipment at higher prices.

The industry is waiting with baited breath as to what will happen once the black liquor rebate ends on December 31st.  Seeing  that 160% of profit by the U.S. paper industry year to date is due directly to the approximate  2.6 billion dollar payments brought to you by the U.S. Congress. It is very likely that a whole lot of    marginal and best in class capacity could be taken out soon.   The magnitude of the rebates is responsible for some pricing situations that are significantly below cost.  Some mills are producing pulp simply for the ability to receive the $.50 per gallon payment. This issue will be at the forefront of the industry over the next quarter.
